As of Late: Moving Past the January Blues

Ugh, thank goodness January is over. That was by far one of the most emotionally exhausting January’s I’ve had in years, too. And my NY resolution of reading 60 books has been scrapped: I read 1 measly book in January, so I decided to adjust my goal to 40. Maybe things will pick up later.

In the meantime, here’s some things that have caught my attention:

Burgers, Bitches, and Bullshit Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino on misogyny in the music industry. It’s sad, frustrating, and unfortunately altogether unsurprising. This is the world we live in, folks.

Winged World Etsy Store I’m on another “find more things for my kitchen gallery wall” kick, and these painted catalog cards may just do the trick.

The Rise and Fall of the American Shopping Mall An interesting, but brief, overview of the history of malls in the US. Apparently, the creator of the mall was a Socialist. Huh. Related: a dead Tumblr on dead malls.

Rabbit Fur Coat Turns 10 My favorite Jenny Lewis album is a decade old! Granted, I didn’t get into JL until a few years ago, but I enjoy a good piece ruminating on albums I love. The special edition red vinyl better hurry up and get to my doorstep, please and thank you.

Akashic Noir Series I’m almost finished with Las Vegas Noir, a short story collection of crime stories that take place in and around Vegas. Some stories are definitely better than others, but it’s the best thing I’ve seen Jarret Keene’s named attached to (I was not a fan of another short story collection he edited as well as his Killers bio). If you look at the series, there’s noir short story collections for several major cities in the US and around the world. Sometime needs to write Oklahoma Noir. Start with anywhere in rural Oklahoma, and you’d be set!
